Consequences of Migrant Labour on Nandi Rural Households, 1908 - 1963
This paper analysed the consequences of migrant labour on Nandi rural households from the period 1908 to 1963. It made an empirical study on the manner in which the family relationships were affected by migrant labour. The study adopted the Materialism approach, the Pull-Push theory, and a qualitative design. It employed a purposive sampling. It targeted 100 participants. The data was analysed in a comparative historical approach. The study found out that migrant labour increased the workload of wives, illegitimate children were born including chotaras, family disintegration and divorce, sexual promiscuity, venereal diseases and prostitution, and single parenthood.

Coping strategies among the Nandi rural households
This paper demonstrates various attempts by the wives of Nandi migrant labourers to devise household surviving strategies to cope with the prolonged absence of their spouses in the colonial period (1908-1963). The study utilised the concept of Agency and a qualitative design, purposive sampling, 40 wives and 15 relatives of the migrant labourers. The socio-cultural and economic strategies that they devised included utilising their husbands’ remittances, seeking additional employment, domestic trading, traditional beer brewing, cooperative cultivation, hired labour, gathering firewood, prostitution, concubinage, and elopement. They succeeded to a large extent and managed to expand plots, bought cattle among other benefits.

Proximate and anti-nutrient profiles of tubers of Dioscorea bulbifera from Rivers State, Nigeria: Nutritional and Health implications of consumption
The proximate and anti-nutrient profiles of Dioscorea bulbifera tubers were determined. The proximate profile included high crude fiber (18.17±6.28%/wet weight and 20.34±6.67%/dry weight) and total carbohydrate (60.83±3.82%/wet weight and 68.41±5.78%/dry weight). The anti-nutrients composition included tannins, cyanogenic glycosides, oxalates, phytates and saponins. These results support the medicinal uses of Dioscorea bulbifera tubers, and suggest its potentials as food, after proper processing

Gas chromatography analysis of the amino acid composition of proteins from the leaves of Acalypha wilkesiana Muell Arg and Tridax procumbens Linn
The amino acid composition of proteins from leaves of Acalypha wilkesiana and Tridax procumbens was studied using gas chromatography. A. wilkesiana leaf protein had lower total essential, but higher total sulphur containing and aromatic amino acid content than T. procumbens leaf protein. Both proteins had high contents of essential amino acids, histidine, threonine and valine, though deficient in isoleucine. Thus both proteins may serves as good sources for the supplementation of histidine, threonine and valine

Expanding Access to Quality Tertiary Education through Distance education in Ghana: A Literature Review
The study of impact of Distance Education (DE) expanding access and providing quality tertiary education in Ghana has become eminent in the midst of large number of students enrolled in DE institutions. . This paper reviews DE literature with focus on the development of DE in Ghana between 1982 to date. In the context of statistics reviewed from the NCTE, DE is seemingly observed as serving the purpose of access without recourse to quality. The paper draws on the weaknesses and strengths of “access” and “quality” and how each complements the other to ensure effective impact.

New class of estimators of population mean using known median of the study variable
In the present manuscript, a new class of estimators of population mean has been proposed. This estimator makes use of the information on the population median of the study variable. The expressions for the bias and the mean squared error of the proposed class of estimators have been derived up to the first order of approximation. The optimum value of the characterizing scalar which minimizes the mean squared error of the proposed class has been obtained. The minimum mean squared error for this optimum value of the characterizing scalar is also obtained. The proposed estimator has been compared with the competing estimators of population mean which make use of auxiliary information. A numerical study is also carried out to judge the performances of the proposed and the competing estimators.

Some peculiarities of alkylation reactions of phenol with C4-fraction dimerization products of pyrolysis process
Alkylation reactions of phenol with dimerization products of devinylated C4-fraction obtained by the pyrolysis of low-octane gasoil were studied in the presence of KU-23 catalyst. Alkylation reaction was carried out on the continuous unit. As a result of alkylation reaction, it was studied the influence of temperature, time, initial components mol ratios and catalyst amount on the yield and selectivity. From the results of the researches it’s evident that alkylation of phenol pyrolysis process with dimerization products of C4-fraction in the presence of KU-23 catalyst are carried out under the following conditions: tempe¬rature 120°C, mole ratio of phenol to the fraction - 1:2, reaction time - 5 hours and catalyst amount - 10%. In this case the yield of the target product on phenol was 80.4%, and selectivity on the target pro¬duct was 95.7%.

Internet usage and its relationship to happiness – as an indicator to well-being
Well-being includes many aspects such as happiness, energy, leisure, peace with oneself, contentment and sensitivity to the environment. It is a sense of balance between different aspects of life - from physical to emotional to spiritual and the much researched psychological well-being. The domain of the psychological well-being lies in the everyday experiences of people. To say the Internet is an important component of human life is a statement that is not exaggerated. Typically the human race would come to a standstill or become non-existent without the usage of internet, be it in mobile /computer to surf and check Facebook, Whatsapp, and other social media. A report by UK’s chartered institute of IT (BCS) found that 35,000 people who use the internet reported that it made them feel happier and better about their lives (BCS, 2010). Happiness is a gregarious feeling and is usually multiplied with better communication channels and robust interaction among people leading to an integrated well-being in individuals. Technology in the form of Internet helps in a large amount of communication and interaction, which can happen in a minuscule time. The purview of the present research is to analyse the relationship between Internet Addiction and Happiness in relation to Well-being. The sample consists of 150 Internet users both male and female. Internet Addiction Test (IAT; 1998) by Dr. Kimberly Young and The Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ; 2002) by Peter Hills, Michael Argyle were used to measure Internet addiction and Happiness respectively. The results thus obtained were subjected to statistical analysis.

Flood Risk Assessment In Akoko-Edo And Environs South–South Nigeria Using GIS And Landsat Data
This work presents the results of a flood risk assessment in Akoko-Edo and environs using GIS and landsat-TM data. This study is aimed at identifying the causes of the flood and quantifying the hydrological processes leading to this extreme event through a Geographic Information System (GIS) and Landsat approach. It also assesses the situation, through the analysis of the spatial and temporal rainfall variability and the quantification of the discharge at different locations in the study area and compared with other cases that are believed to be the cause for high runoff volume .This study thus tries to identify the causes for the occurrence of floods and future risks to look over options for prevention or reduction of the hazard in the area by concentrating the study in the area through GIS and landsat based analysis. The data was processed and enhanced to give colour composites, geologic maps, drainage pattern, land use and land cover map, flood risk area map, rain fall map. The results showed that Akoko- Edo area has a low risk to flooding in the Northwest area while in Etsako East area there is high risk towards the Northwest, central and the Eastern part of the area, as well as towards the Northern part there is a very high risk of flooding. In the central area, there is a moderate risk while there is a low to very low risk towards the southeastern part of the area. Etsako west has a moderately high risk to flooding in the Southern part to a very high risk in the South while in the central there is a very high risk to flooding for people living around the area but towards the North there is a very low to low risk of flooding.
