Older Pupil’s Views on the Ghana School Feeding Programme: A Case of Yikpee D/A Primary School in Lawra District of the Upper West Region
Previous studies on Ghana's school feeding programme have largely taken a quantitative approach in assessing and analyzing its impact on increases in enrolment, attendance, retention, short-term health and nutritional benefits. This study employed qualitative instruments, using a semi-structured interview guide and observation checklists on five pupils in one school Yikpee D/A Primary School in order to fill the gap in the quantitative studies as well as look at the views of older students on the School Feeding Programme. The results showed that older pupils often came from poor and illiterate families,-whose parents were peasant farmers and that for those children, their decisions to enroll in school were informed by a desire for gainful employment, escape from farming and the ability to read and write in the future. It was also revealed that it was not the food per se that attracted these children to school; but the fact that the school was viewed to be a welcoming place for learning and opportunity for them to achieve their future goals. Although the pupils were in favour of the feeding programme, they wished it stopped because it distracted their attention in class. The study has thus put forward some policy recommendations on the school feeding programmes which include the need to seek the views of target beneficiaries on whether, where and when to implement the programme as a policy intervention before final decisions are made to cover all neighbouring schools.

The curriculum plays an important role in education. Among them is the importance of cultivating the character and the unity of creation. This is in line with the second core of the Education Development Master Plan (PIPP), namely Developing Human Capital. Participation in co-curricular activities can also increase the level of student’s discipline. Based on some studies, it found that the co-curricular activity was able to reduce the disciplinary problem to a minimum level. However, in this effort, teachers, parents and communities need to work together and strengthen relationships with one another. Negative perceptions of co-curricular implementation in schools should eradicated. Schools and parents need to be more open-minded.

Is Kenya likely to achieve education for all by 2015? Strength and challenges
The participation of Government of Kenya in the Jomtien Conference in 1990, and its subsequent endorsement of EFA Declaration, re-enforced the commitment Kenya had on the provision of education to its citizens. The events related to the development of education sector in the country following the Jomtien Conference exhibit how Kenya has tried to domesticate the EFA Declarations. Two crucial events laid the foundation for domesticating EFA commitments in the country. These are-: National Conference on Education for All held in Kisumu in 1992, and National Symposium on the Education of the Girl-Child held in Machakos in 1994. Education for all is not about putting children in a classroom. It is about providing children with a qualified teaching professional in acceptable teaching and learning environment. While it is extremely encouraging that the Kenya government took the first bold step in implementing free primary education in 2003, this achievement has not been without challenges. This paper examines the progress, challenges and the strategies and the government in trying to achieve education for all.
