Factors affecting students’ academic success at higher level: instrument development & its validation
Present study was carried out to develop and validate an instrument for measuring different factors affecting upon students’ success at higher educational level. Focus group discussions and extensive literature review was done in order to generate an item pool for the instrument. Initially 75 items were generated under ten dimensions namely: motivation, intellectual abilities, personality brought up, institutional environment, socio- economic background, family participation, peer group, influence of siblings, awareness about future goals and awareness about current trends in the subject. After qualitative item analysis, the items were reduced to 60 as 15 were found to be repetitive in nature. These 60 item statements were administered to 100 graduating students of public universities in Islamabad region. The data thus obtained was subjected to factor analysis. As a result ten subscales containing 45 items in total were constructed with Eigen value above 2.83. Split half reliability for both halves was expressed at .78 and .89. Psychometric properties demonstrate that SSHL is a valid and reliable instrument to be used in research studies related to students’ academic success at higher level.

Variations in locus of control due to changing social roles
The study examined the nature and characteristics of locus of control across three critical phases of the life span such as young adulthood (20-25 yrs.), middle age (40-45 yrs.), and old age (65-70 yrs.) among both males and females. The sample consisted of 90 subjects, 30 from each of the age categories. Equal number of males and females from each of the categories were randomly selected. All the subjects were individually administered Rotter’s ‘Internal-External Locus of Control Scale. The results were analyzed for observing age-related and sex-related effects and changes in locus of control. Major findings of the study are summarized below. Both males and females are highly internals during the middle age, while they are externals at young and old age. Females show relatively more of external locus of control than males. However, the male-female difference was not found to be statistically significant across any of the three age groups. The interaction effect between age and sex was also not found to be significant suggesting that these two are independent factors with respect to locus of control.

It was experimentally conducted using a pretest-post test scheme, a control group & the multiple sampling method in which 16 3rd grade female dyslexic students who met the research admission criteria were selected in the simple random method from Esfahan City public elementary schools and who were randomly assigned to 2 experimental and control groups. For information gathering, the 3rd grade elementary school reading test and list of dyslexia symptoms whose reliability and validity had been approved were used. Data were analyzed using the covariance analysis statistical method and SPSS software. The results showed a significant difference (P?0.001) between the 2 experimental and control groups. It can thus be said that phonological educational intervention is effective on the reading performance of dyslexic children and the method can be used to optimize such children's dyslexia.
